  • Cultivation of the Corporate Grapevine

In order for a manager to evade misleading his employees while trying to convey specific information or concept, he has to use universally understood non-verbal language, simplified as much as possible. In my opinion, there are three vital non-verbal categories which if applied properly will fully complete all the functions of the non-verbal communication and will not hinder the verbal one – eye contact, paralanguage and adornment. Modern business culture values eye contact because it maintains the balance of the interpersonal relationships between the seniors and the workers. Looking away might be read as avoiding the importance of the message conveyed. Thus, keeping eye contact with the employees when talking…

  • Retrospective Analysis of a Change in the Psychiatric ICU

The result is always a function of how change is managed. There are several change management theories that have been proposed and almost all theories concur, that the success and failure of any change are related to the people factor. It is largely the emotional reactions of people involved in the change process that needs to be managed. Partnership, participation and commitment of staff responsible to implement new processes become critical, else any plan is likely to fail. Change management also emphasizes that people’s fears need to be managed and trust needs to be built hence communication becomes critical. Researchers have highlighted that involving staff in the planning of change,…

  • Economic Bubbles

Usually, it takes place in securities, real estate and stock markets. The rising prices of stocks, securities or properties attract people to invest in them, believing that they will be able to sell them at even higher prices. Prices keep rising till the time when people start losing confidence in the securities or stocks, and thus, a crash occurs which moves the prices back to the original level.” Asset bubbles can exist in an economy with endogenous growth provided that they are not too large and that the growth rate in the equilibrium without bubbles exceeds the interest rate” (Grossman Yanagawa, 2002).A different perspective can be seen from the bubble effect.…

  • Benefits of Employee Training for the Companies

According to Wright McMahanG (1992), such training also motivate and satisfy the employees and encourage them to be more loyal to the firm. Training of the kind also helps develop external with customers, suppliers and distributors etc and internal relations with team members. Thus the overall effect is that the employees work more efficiently than ever-increasing the firm’s profit margins. Firms that do not consider training programs to be an essential part of their functioning suffer in the long run as they cannot operate at maximum efficiency which results in losses and higher employee turnover rate. According to Barney, J (1991, pp 99-120), this is because the employees are not…

  • The Legal Environment of Business

Evidence of counteroffers, discussed below, can lead the courts to conclude that the contract has not been fully constituted.Once an offer has been accepted the court will expect the offeror to give the promised consideration. If the offeror fails to do this, the court will deem that a breach has occurred, which would entitle the offeree to be able to sue for that breach. Offers can be revoked before the deadline, although if the other party has already started to perform their part of the bargain, the court will generally refuse to allow the offeror to revoke the offer. This might occur in a situation where the offeror is offering…

  • Supply Chain of Paper

Outline of the supply chain for paper begins with the growth of trees, raw materials for paper, up to the nearest storage facility to the product’s final consumer. The first stage in the chain is the identification of suitable seeds by a gardener for quality trees. The gardener then grows the seeds into seedlings and in a process that is informed of agricultural skills. The gardener tends the seedlings, in a nursery, for a period until a stage at which the seedlings are mature enough to survive in a real environment for its species’ growth. The young tree is then transferred into a designated location that may be a domestic…

  • Identification the Stages of C elegans

Most molecular genetics experiment cannot be employed on humans because of their complexity. In order to perform these experiments, researchers use certain model organisms which can be cultured very easily in the laboratory and is easy to manipulate. These model organisms though physically different from humans bear certain biochemical and physiological features that have been conserved during evolution (Hedges,2002, p838). With this respect, the nematode worm Caenorhabditis Celegans offer certain exceptional advantages and is one of the foremost model systems in molecular genetics. In order to study gene function in model organisms, single gene mutations are introduced and phenotypical characters are analyzed. The result of this analysis may vary-some of…

  • The Causes and Consequences of the Yom Kippur War

Despite the fact that both sides suffered immense losses emotional, financial, and human values yet Israel was successful in retaining total control of those territories. The war was called the Yom Kippur War by the Israelis or the Ramadan War by the Arabs, as it started on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement and Repentance) and the holy month of Ramadan. It is also called the October war as it was fought in the month of October.“On October 3rd, 1973, Anwar Sadat informed the Soviet Ambassador Vinogradoff of the imminent offensive. A similar meeting took place in Damascus conducted by President Assad. Sadat received tactic support…

  • Ensuring the Development of the Successful Team

These factors underline the basis of the teams performing a singular whole than disjointed units within the framework of the organization or the group that they are working under. Constituting a team is an important measure since it explains the manner in which the team members would carry out their processes and activities in order to reach the ultimate objective – the goal which is insight. Also, the presence of a leader within the ranks is also significant since he is the one who ensures that commitment and devotion are laid towards the activities of the whole team and that the team members are dedicated to the cause of serving…

  • Love and Transcendence A Feminist Approach

The purpose of this discussion is to identify the patriarchal ideology present in both of these works, from a feministic approach and critique. From a first layer point of view, A Midsummer Night’s Dream guides its audience through a beginning which is laced with mismatched lovers all of whom wish to be with a different individual than who they are currently with. The play turns into a vehicle for which to transport the lovers to a strange and wondrously new environment full of unexpectedness. It then returns its lovers to their original habitat which is the city of Athens, symbolic of order and tradition. The play serves as a sort of…

  • Love and Death in Tristan and Iseult

In fact, it may be the essence of that will to live. Love is the universal vessel of forgiveness and redemption, as is death. The associations between life and death within The Romance of Tristan and Iseult carry a universal message of the power of true love and of its absolute finality. The first tale of love is the tale between Blanchefleur, the sister of King Mark, and King Rivalen, the parents of Tristan. Such was her love for King Rivalen that after his death she waited long enough for Tristan to be born before she let go of her spirit. Upon her first meeting with her son, she says, “And…

  • Subprime Lending its Adverse Effects on UK and World Financial Markets And Methods to Rectify and Protect Consumers

From a different point of view, it is noticed by Reiss (2005) that ‘predatory lending, the origination of loans with abusive terms to homeowners, is rampant in the subprime mortgage market’. The approach used by Reiss in order to explain the conditions related to subprime lending is based on the extensive use of this type of lending specifically in mortgages. However, it would be necessary to notice that subprime lending is not used by all consumers worldwide. it is rather preferred by specific categories of population: those who have high credit risk and the use for an alternative method of financing the purchase of a specific product/ asset would be proved…

  • Poverty Line Measurement Analysis

The World Bank introduced the one-dollar-a-day poverty threshold in 1990 in its World Development Report. This poverty line, applicable only in low-income countries, is based on the 1985 purchasing power parity (PPP) dollars and refers to household expenditure per person. This paper will determine whether the “one dollar-a-day” poverty indicator and those measures based on it are reasonable benchmarks for poverty incidence across the world. Key sections are outlined to achieve this end: a review of the theory. empirical analysis of the data. policy recommendations and conclusion. It was found that while the one-dollar-a-day indicator and those poverty measures based on it are credible and may reflect true poverty incidence, they are…

  • A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings by Garca Mrquez

For the readers, it presents a situation similar to that of playing a cat and mouse game. They do not know what to expect at what time and the more the plot advances, the more the author’s intentions become apparent. The iconic Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez is widely regarded among the most prolific exponents of magic realism. García Márquez’s works abound with the use of this literary device. Be it his magnum opus One Hundred Years of Solitude or the short novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Márquez’s literary works interplay between the ordinary and the extraordinary with effortless ease, rendering a sense of the perpetual to the otherwise…

  • What Needs to Happen in Order to Fix or Slow Down Global Warming

As Michael Page (2007) has rightly said,” a firm and ever-growing body of evidence point to a clear picture: the world is warming, this warming is due to human activity increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and if emissions continue unabated the warming will too, with increasingly serious consequences.”Global warming is the result of the average increase in the temperature of the earth. It takes place when there is an excessive accumulation of greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol has listed six greenhouse gases that can cause global warming. They are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, perfluorocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride. A rise in the temperature of the earth…

  • American Poetry of Elizabeth Bishop

Trying to reduce her sentiments into the confined language of Imagism would have lost a great deal of the subtext, where a great deal of her meaning resides. It is through these devices that the life of the poet emerges, making statements of alienation, isolation and frustration even while discussing something as innocuous-seeming as the moon. Not scrimping on the use of extended metaphors to express her ideas, Bishop is a master of the lyrical phrase. By looking at poems such as “The Man-Moth,” “The Fish,” “Filling Station” and “Pink Dog,” one can get a sense of how the use of adjectives within her poetry provides Bishop with the power…

  • Why Did So Many Colonist Die in Early Jamestown

At first, they had easy access to basics like clean water and simple fortifications that would protect them from native attacks. The journey was successful. In their first weeks of settling, they constructed a triangular fort and named the settlement Jamestown, saying that paying homage to King James I. Spirits was high. The colonists were keen on discovering riches, bringing Christianity to the Native Americans, and even opening up a lucrative trade route to China. This was never to be. A considerable number of the colonists died. Some of them succumbed to water-borne diseases while the tides, the natives, and the lack of food killed others. The biggest demise, however, remains…

  • The Diversity in the Media

To fully understand the whole concept of media diversity, it is imperative to take a close look at the meaning of the whole phenomenon. Thus, according to a journal entitled ‘Media Diversity Matters,’ [online 2008], a diverse media is one that is inclusive of minorities and women in content, varied employment structures, that is who reports, or produces what we consume and most importantly the ownership structure of organizations that dictate what we hear and see as a way of ensuring that all the stories of America can be told and be heard in a fair manner.According to the same article mentioned above, it can be noted that the media…

  • Research Findings for Asthma

The lining of the airways swells from inflammation, which causes an increase in mucus that blocks the airways. Because it’s more difficult to breathe out than to breathe in, more air is retained in the air sacs in the lungs with each breath. Someone having an asthma attack may feel as though he or she is breathing through a narrow straw or, in the case of a severe attack, may even have the feeling of near suffocation. The changes that take place in the lungs of asthmatic persons make the airways hyper-reactive to many different types of stimuli that don’t affect healthy lungs. In an asthma attack, the muscle tissue in…

  • Aristotle’s Moral Virtues and Practical Wisdom

This is an important distinction to make as the formation of these moral virtues depends in large measure upon the experiences one has that help form them. The second part of the equation for happiness is the exercise of practical wisdom. Generally, Aristotle said that practical wisdom is wisdom based on rationality and an accurate interpretation of what the greatest good would be in a given situation. This is a natural tendency in all people, to try to make decisions in life that are based upon the wisdom they’ve learned so far, but Aristotle indicates that without the benefit of well-developed moral virtues, these decisions will often lead to imperfect…

  • An Analysis of The Secretary Chant by Marge Piercy

The poem is written using stylistic allegoric interpretations of realities in which a clerk is about to spend the comfortable hours of the daytime while she still dreams about the bigger versions of the life settings where everything has been changing in proportion to the development of the life plot. However, still, a woman in this poem is depicted to be suppressed by the standardized normative and regulations of the workplace where they are surrounded by Xerox and other supplies. Still, the words in this poem have the extended meaning that Piercy uses to decorate the adaptation of the poem to the concrete readers.Since 1973, when Piercy wrote this poem,…

  • CO2 Emissions Into the Atmosphere

Carbon Dioxide is a molecular compound containing two atoms of oxygen and one carbon atom. When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere it can cause many problems to the atmosphere and life on the ground. In today’s world, there are climate changes brought on by the release of carbon emissions. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is beginning to mass together, creating problems that need to be taken care of at this moment. There are many ways for carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. Volcanic activity releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and ruptured land can allow sealed gasses to escape, but one major cause of Carbon dioxide…

  • Nazi Youth Movement

The path to achieving this goal was to create a curriculum for these young men – and women – and to erase prior teachings in religion and community, and to re-indoctrinate their thinking in the direction of the Third Reich.Today, more than 60 years after the end of World War II, people have more unanswered questions about the period than ever before. Chief among those questions is how was Hitler’s Nazi regime able to collect young children and adolescents from Germany’s families and households, which virtually surrendered their children to be collectively nurtured, mentally and emotionally shaped by the state as it assumed the role of surrogate parent to thousands…

  • Nutrition Grapefruit Diet

The whole plant, including the flowers and most especially its fruit, can be made to treat fungal infections, acne, indigestion, liver and gall bladder conditions, urinary infections, and even insomnia (Allen and Allen, 2007). It gained its popularity during the Great Depression during the late 1920s when “grapefruit, along with other citrus fruits, could be had for free with orange food stamps from the welfare board” (Allen and Allen, 2007). Because it has become a staple food during that time, the Grapefruit Diet emerged during the 1930s and became a fad diet during the 1970s up until the 1980s (Allen and Allen, 2007 and Kellow, 2007a). The fad diet asserted…

  • British Airways Leadership and Change

During 2001-2 the Global recession forced further cuts in jobs and reduction in operations and during 2002-3 the threat of imminent war in the Middle East affected operations as this was the most profitable segment. It is very highly unionized and faced industrial action every now and then. This results not only in higher wage bills but also loss in operations. Resistance causes friction which affects efficiency and productivity. This option is found to be more favorable as it will help to bring down fuel costs substantially and as fuel is the single biggest expense, it looks most attractive. This will also mean bigger wide-bodied aircraft that can take in more passengers…

  • Effects of Fats and Cholesterol on Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease, abbreviated as CVD, is known to be the leading cause of death in the world today (Gaziano, Reddy, Paccaud, Horton, Chaturvedi, 2006). Cardiovascular diseases include many kinds of diseases that mainly consist of the heart, brain, arteries, and other essential organs.Cardiovascular diseases were not very common back in the start of the 20th century. They accounted for lower than 10% of the deaths in the world. This figure, however, was increased to 30% by 2001, 80% of which included deaths in countries with low-income levels. Moreover, it was predicted that by 2020, deaths due to CVD will account for the biggest chunk globally (Gaziano, Reddy, Paccaud, Horton, Chaturvedi,…

  • The Wife of Bath’s Tale

Furthermore, since a man writes her prologue, we cannot help but think about why he wrote it. This imaginary character gives Chaucer a chance to address several subjects that might have been forbidden during his time. By making use of irony and wittiness, Chaucer can construct statements regarding women and how they are dealt with. It is ought to be noted that Chaucer was seeking to embody a woman’s voice. Actually, by creating the Wife of Bath, we can presume he wanted to produce a memorable personality in her.In her Prologue as part of "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Wife of Bath offers readers a complex portrait of…

  • Competition in Supermarket Industry

When trying to capture a large market, especially during the peak periods of the year, most supermarkets tend to lower their prices in comparison to that of their rivals in a bid to retain and get more customers due to the competitive advantages that they seek to leverage within the market. In marking the boundaries in this industry the researcher must note that most supermarkets open up new stores so as to bring their products closer to the customers (i.e. to gain a greater degree of market penetration) (Masso et al 2011, p. 13). This of course has the effect of causing the profit margin to go lower than expected since…

  • Biodiversity Action Plan

The landscape is generally flat or gently undulating between 30 and 50 metres above sea level. The area to the west, the Western Woodland Farmlands, in contrast has a flatter landscape and fewer woodlands.Open landscape with trees in distant spots is the major characteristic due to removal of internal field boundaries in order to support arable usage. There is however some remaining mixed woodlands around the edge of the Hall Place estate. The pattern of cultivation now gives a bright green landscape in spring compared with the more subtle colours of the old traditional pastures. As usual, road and rail transport routes cut across this landscape. The minimum temperature ranges from…

  • SocioEconomic Consequences of Landmines

When surface transportation is hampered, farmers can no longer transit their produce to marketplaces. This results in inflation and soaring of commodity prices. Mined roads make the effects of famine and drought more severe by hampering food relief and restricting the movement of supplies.Disastrous results follow when mines are embedded in fertile agricultural lands. For example, in Zimbabwe diseases are rampant and thousands of cattle are infected with foot and mouth disease. The total livestock casualties since 1980 had reached a whopping nine thousand – worth 15 million Zimbabwean dollars. Add to this, the loss of herdsmen’s limbs and lives – it paints a distressing picture. In Mupa National Park…

  • How Useful Is Harm Principle in Helping Us Define the Limits of Free Speech

His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinion of others, to do so would be wise, or even right…The only part of the conduct of anyone, for which he is amenable to society, is that which concerns others. • Paul the Apostle to the Gentile

It started with Saul’s approval in the stoning of Stephen that marked ‘’the beginning of great persecution against the Church in Jerusalem’’ (Acts 8:1). It is Saul’s zeal to fulfill his agenda of persecuting the early Christians which were heavily influenced by his commitment to his belief as a strict ‘’Shammaite Pharisee’’ (Wright, p. 26). His dedication to persecute the church justifies his action ‘’even beyond the borders of the Holy Land itself’’ (Wright, p. 26).On his way to Damascus to carry his mission, ‘’a light from the sky suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice…’’ (Acts 9: 3-4). He was blinded by the…

  • Taming the Wild Things for Children

  • In Between Masculinity and Society

As the story line progresses the reader slowly comes to the conclusion that it is the narrator’s own selfish desires and insecurity are what ultimately destroys the image of masculinity he has worked so hard to achieve. "Men’s behaviour," McEwan has been quoted as saying, " is somehow invisible. we don’t see ourselves as having a behaviour that is indefinitely male, were just human" (Brown). The blurring of the lines between what is masculine and what is feminine is brought to the forefront in Dead as They Come as the narrator fights with emotions that are characterized with those belonging to both male and female alike. As the narrator begins…

His first work as a short-story writer won a prize offered in 1833 by the Baltimore Saturday Visitor. Poe achieved recognition as a critic, is the first in America to appreciate E.B. Browning, Tennyson, Dickens, Hawthorne, and Lowell. Of his tales of fantasy, among the most remarkable is…

Though the definition may seem simple but it indicates…

  • Level of CO2 that Affects the Microbial Activity Diversity and Numbers

Previously reported C balance calculations showed that in the ecosystem investigated growing season soil C inputs were strongly enhanced under elevated CO2. It is hypothesized that the absence of microbial responses to these enhanced soil C fluxes originated from mineral nutrient limitations of microbial processes. Laboratory incubations showed that short-term microbial growth (one week) was strongly limited by N availability, whereas P was not limiting in this soil. The absence of large effects of elevated CO2 on microbial activity or biomass in such nutrient-poor natural ecosystems is in marked contrast to previously published large and short-term microbial responses to CO2 enrichment which were found in fertilized or disturbed systems. It…

  • Reality construction 2

Reality Construction Rule #2: Define the SituationAt its most basic level, framing reality means defining “the situation here and now” in ways that connect with others. In the sense I use it here, framing involves the ability to shape the mean- ing of a subject—usually the situation at hand—to judge its character and significance through the meanings we include and exclude, as well as those we emphasize when communicating.4 At his first formal news conference on August 7, 2007, how did Robert Murray define “the situation here and now”? He was adamant that an earthquake had caused the mine’s collapse—not his company’s practice of “retreat mining,” which is exceedingly dangerous and…

  • The rules of reality construction

Reality Construction Rule #1: Control the ContextLeaders often cannot control events, but they can control the context under which events are seen if they recognize a framing opportunity. Some leaders disparage communication as something they just do automati- cally. They may also label communication “mere rhetoric,” “window dressing,” or “just words” because it cannot change the hard cold facts of a situation. True as that observation may be, however, it falls far short of being complete.Consider the situation Robert E. Murray—chairman of the Murray Energy Corporation and co-owner of the Crandall Canyon mine in Utah— faced on August 6, 2007, when the mine caved in with six miners trappedThe Reality of…

Who Am I ? Evaluating our Identity on Many LevelsI am sure you have often heard the expressions in people’s speech… “I identify with…” “My identity is…” It is how we feel we belong to a certain group or how our belief system is connected with members of a certain group. Our identity forms a bridge between ourselves and culture and communication. Some say we convey our identity when we speak, we do but I also contend that we convey our personal metaphors which can be an identifier as well as unspoken intentions and desires. The metaphoric speech within cultures can lead to periods of confusion and unclear messaging as…
